SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS MONTH PROCLAMATION

APRIL 2017

WHEREAS, More than 30,000 people in Pennsylvania seek services each year from the 50 sexual assault centers that serve all 67 counties in the Commonwealth;

WHEREAS, Rape, sexual assault and sexual harassment harm our community, and statistics show one in five women and one in 71 men will be raped at some point in their lives (Black et al., 2011);

WHEREAS, Child sexual abuse prevention must be a priority to confront the reality that one in six boys and one in four girls will experience sexual assault before age 18 (Dube et al. 2005);

WHEREAS, Young people experience heightened rates of sexual violence, and youth ages 12-17 were 2.5 times as likely to be victims of rape or sexual assault (Snyder & Sickmund, 2006);

WHEREAS, A Safe Place supported and provided services to 85 men, women and children who experienced sexual abuse/assault in Warren County in 2015;

WHEREAS, Sexual violence creates a climate of fear, anger, and/or disbelief in the workplaces, college campuses, and communities that it occurs in;

WHEREAS, Prevention starts with challenging victim-blaming and believing survivors when they disclose.   Individuals can model supportive relationships and behaviors, call out harmful attitudes, and challenge the societal acceptance of sexual assault;

WHEREAS, We must work together to educate our community about sexual violence prevention, supporting survivors, and speaking out against harmful attitudes and actions;

WHEREAS, In 2017 the national Sexual Assault Awareness Month slogan declares “PREVENTION IS POSSIBLE”.   Prevention is possible when everyone gets involved by increasing education, awareness, and community involvement.   It’s up to us as a community to create a safer environment for all whom live and work in our community.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, That the Warren County Commissioners, join A Safe Place and communities across the nation in recognizing the month of April 2017 as Sexual Assault Awareness Month.
